A lovely scenic drive with beautiful picnic spots and walks along the way. Once at the top you are gifted with stunning panoramic views of the regions land, coast & sea

Great walk, not too long but not too short either. Stairs were a killer but a great challenge if you're not as unfit as me probably! There are alternative routes that gradually slope up if you prefer an easier path. Great views at the top!
C F — Google review
Great place to watch the sunset or just go during the day to watch over town. The walk up is relatively easy but requires walking up multiple stairs. The view is really beautiful and it's also a good spot for a picnic. There is a children playground and some exercices accessories.

Really cool shot for pictures, you can walk or drive up

Good for a walk up for great views. Options of a gradual path or steep steps, there are exercise stations to add to a workout.

Great view of gisborne at its entirety. Easy access to drive up. As long as drunken teens dont ruin it.

Great exercise area. Excellent views. Fantastic blend of trees, paths and shared Roadway. Need to respect shared roadway as traffic accelerates up the hill. Few Japanese climber weeds agmonst trees, posing as a threat.

Located in the coastal destination of Gisborne, New Zealand, the Gisborne Wine Centre offers a wide selection of wines from the region for tasting and purchase. Visitors can enjoy tailored and guided wine tastings by appointment or simply relax with a glass of their favorite varietal alongside lunch or dinner. The center is closed on Mondays but provides a great spot for lunch with generous portion sizes and attentive staff.
Great spot for lunch. Nice selection of dishes of generous size. Staff were attentive. Location is good for parking and atmosphere. Worth stepping away from the city for a wander to the port side for this little treat. Great selection of wines and drinks round this off.

A real lovely place to taste new Zealand wine, with view on the harbour, have little things to eat with it, with a staff very attentive ! I recommend !

The name sounds a bit like a shop than a wine bar or restaurant.Nice hidden joint close to the water.Good selection of wines and small bites.Tried the bruschetta, as we weren't as hungry. Big portion and really nice flavours.
Linda A — Google review
This place was referred to us from a local in Rotorua. Very dissapointed as what is offered for tasting is very limited and the consumer has no choice other than not to taste at all. This is a restaurant that is trying to offer wine tasting for the region but fails to offer the region's wines to taste. The cheese platter we had was tasty though. If you're looking to taste wines from the Gisborne region this is not the place to visit.

Great spot for an after work drink while enjoying the sunset 🍷 great selection of wines from around New Zealand. Indoor/Outdoor seating that looks over the water.

My two Children and Myself went here for lunch, we all enjoyed the food, which was very delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we will be back. I highly recommend The Gisborne Wine Centre which also has a nive setting overlooking the harbour

This is a fabulous place to enjoy tasting wine overlooking the harbor. You can order a tasting flight of either red or white wines, which will be brought to your table. We highly recommend ordering one of their appetizer platters to accompany our wine. Visiting here was one of our favorite Gisborne experiences!

Lovely time tonight - had the chance to watch the stingrays in the harbour before a fantastic wine and pud at the wine centre. Girls went out of their way to make sure we had the right wine for our personal tastes and the atmosphere was lovely. Thankyou!

The Tairawhiti Museum is a popular attraction that showcases the history and culture of the East Coast Maori and colonial settlers. It features various exhibits, artifacts, artworks, educational programs, and historic photographic displays. The museum has a maritime wing that highlights waka, whaling, Cooks Poverty Bay and a vintage surfboard collection. Visitors can also explore Gisborne's oldest house - Wyllie Cottage (1872).
I am an Australian visitor to the Tairawhiti Cafe, and today was my second visit. I only had a hot chocolate on this day, but it was so delicious! The ladies serving are very friendly and efficient. This place is obviously quite popular. The menu isn't huge, but sufficient.

The museum has a relaxing cafe with a shaded outdoor deck. A wide range of historical information, some captions were a bit hard to read. The art gallery is very large and makes the visit really worthwhile. Only $5 for non residents.

Great place, many exhibitions at the same time. Loads of local, cultural and artsy presentations for all ages, also seems to be a good place for the coffee and hang out, they do breakfasts.I would visit again as presentations change all the time and the ability to be close and intimate with all the works makes you think closer about the impact of art on human everyday existence.

Excellent C company display (Maori batallion) adjoins the museum, which is free. Museum itself is a great place to visit, excellent and timely displays on the history of Aotearoa / NZ.Only major drag was an internal sliding door toward the back which screeched on opening, it just lowered the mood of the place, just remove the bloody thing!Otherwise, Ka pai.

One of the ladys who was on today was very rude ... where the other lady was more than helpful which was so lovely but the other lady kept interrupted and we just ended up walking out .... the only part of the museum we enjoyed was the downstairs with the boat ....

Bigger museum than I expected. You get a lot for your money (5$ for visitor). There is a good exposition about the Maori story, one about Da Vinci, some modern art and a boat.Well located, beautiful view of the river.

Really awesome and interesting. I loved the East Coast settlers exhibition, Star of Canada ship and the old local photos the best. My 9yr old loved it too which was surprising. We spent over 2 hours here. Gift shop has really nice things. The brewery offers an impressive variety of craft beers, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
I was recommended this beer brewery by a friend and I’m so glad I made it there during my Gisborne visit. Their pizzas were amazing, and who can resist a $20 beer and gourmet pizza deal? Absolute bargain. Would surely revisit when I’m out that way again!

Where do I start! Everyone I’ve encountered that worked here was delightful, and of course the pizza and beer was incredibly delicious. But, I’ve just been down in Gizzy for my grandmothers funeral and have been there every night (I even wrote her Eulogy here over a pizza and beer), and felt truly looked after. And man, I already miss those pizzas.

Amazing beer! We had No access and Superdelic saison and both were fabulous. On Mon-Fri they have lunch pizza combo (small pizza and any drink) from 12-4PM and we had it with peperoni pizza and pizza with chicken and sour cream with sesami seeds and both were above expectations! Really thin crispy crust and with a lot of topping, great deal. We came here at 3 pm after Railbikes tour and we were properly hungry and thisrty and this was just perfect. Recommending both, this cosy Brewery and Railbikes as well. Simply perfect day.

Great beer selection. No place in Gisborne can compete. The 20.00 beer and pizza special between 12-4:00 is a great deal. Pizza is just " okay", nothing special about the pizza. Hard crust, limited toppings. But for the price...can't expect much.So pretty pleased overall. Good cold beer, pizza and quick service. Would definitely come back.

Always an enjoyable experience.Great atmosphere and staff are helpful and welcoming. When we have had pizza, it's fantastic. My favorite beers are the left of field brews; Kristall Weissen and Point Annilation which is aptly named. The reason for 4 stars? Their other IPA's leave me cold.

Busy brewery - with some nice brews available. Pizza was a bit questionable and took 50 mins to come out when not that busy. They were also out of all ciders which was a shame as two ppl from our group didn’t drink beer. Nice atmosphere though and good beer selection.

Enjoyed a delightful lunch at Bushmere Estate during a rainy day despite being short-staffed and busy due to a large group reservation. Received good service and had the opportunity to indulge in their flight style wine tasting for an affordable price of $12 per person. Highly recommend visiting this establishment for a fantastic lunch, which would likely be even better on a sunny day. The option of dining amidst the vineyard adds to its appeal.
We were a group of 10 for a wine tasting. Shona was so great - answered all our questions, didn't rush us at all, and was super engaging. We could see how passionate she was about what she does. We thought the tasting for $7.50 was a steal and the cheese and bread platters were amazing! Totally recommend.

Nice lovely place. Welcoming staffs. I don’t drink wine, but those in my team enjoyed wine tasting and ended up buying a Chardonnay. Not in menu, but they made a coffee for my mum 😊.But if you are a vegan, the only item in menu is Canneloni. We were 50% vegan in our team, and had to order two Canneloni coz no option.

Very impressed from start to finish. Warmly greeted, taken to a lovely outdoor setting for two (have been before with work, which bought me back). It was clear that everything was cooked with love and it was beautifully presented. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the wait times between dishes was spot on. Thank you for providing a lovely dining experience. We will be back.

Thought we would pop in here after another wine tasting and the staff were pretty rushed off their feet due to a cruise ship being in town and having 5 large groups throughout the day. All the staff were very accommodating and managed to squeeze us in for a wine tasting. We had the pleasure of speaking to the owner of the winery who talked us through all the eight wines all for only $10 and convinced us to try wines we wouldn’t normally pick and we were pleasantly surprised. Loved our experience here and will definitely be ordering some wines for Christmas

We had an absolutely delicious lunch here on a rainy day when they were understaffed and busy with a large group booking. Despite this, we still received good service and their flight style wine tasting was still available (for a very reasonable $12 pp). I would highly recommend coming for a great lunch - and I’m sure it would be twice as good on a nice day.

Didn’t wine taste, we only sat down for lunch after a rail bike tour. Service was excellent, location - stunning and crucially, the food was delicious. The manager was apologetic that there was a bit of a wait but the wait times were pretty reasonable & the food came out relatively quick. We had the hummus dip with fresh crunchy bread, a cannelloni with creamy ricotta spinach filling and sticky lamb ribs which was finger licking good. Highly recommend.

Another wine region to consider exploring is the area around Matawhero, which includes Matawhero Wines and Bridge Estate Vineyard. Matawhero Wines offers a charming outdoor dining setting where visitors can sample their wines and enjoy platters. Similarly, Bridge Estate Vineyard, open from Wednesday to Sunday, provides another opportunity to experience the local wines. Additionally, Bushmere Estate in Makaraka offers a more upscale wining and dining experience at their Vines restaurant.
Lovely place where we stoped for a wine testing moment after work, 12$ the 4 wines, that you can choose. We really liked it, meet a nice French lady who explained us everything. The outside is cute, and just next to the vineyard.

Wine was good. New staff who did not know the wine, which was odd. Good bread with the wine. Live music was a bonus. The children of the family who owned the winery were ok for me but others were not happy about how boisterous bordering on feral they were.

Fantastic experience. Family friendly. The kids were able to easily play. Gourmet picnics available to build your own. Excellent explanations of wine.

Loved this place once we figured how the "picnic" menu worked.1. There's a big self-service fridge where you grab Ciabatta, crackers, cheeses, olives, pesto etc. yourself.2. Prices for the different items are on a black-board by the cabinet (sorry I should have included a photo).3. Cutlery is also by the cabinet, grab what you want and take it to the cash register.4. Order a glass of wine, or a taster ($12 - cheap!!) of 4. There was only one red available for tasting when we were there.5, Take your wine and "picnic" outside to one of the tables, or eat inside, and enjoy!Food was great, wine was yummy, price was good, atmosphere was great. The French staff member was friendly and helpful. The only downside was the noise from the road, and the building and grounds could do with a cobweb/leaf cleanup.

A fantastic find.. A long established winery that prides itself for doing things differently. What a shame it was raining while we were there. On a sunny day I can not think of a nicer place to sample their wines and share a platter while watching some cooks scratch around. The wines are beautifully crafted.. We filled the boot of the car and look forward to continue enjoying the wine in the weeks to come.

Was really disappointed with our experience. We went here for a wine tasting ($5 for 6 different wines - good start) but we weren’t given clean glasses between each wine, (tasted a red from the same glass we’d tasted white and rose from). We were barely told anything about each of the wines except the names and ‘this is popular at the moment’, and worst of all they were all warm! None of the wines were refrigerated, and even when we bought a glass afterwards we were poured wine from yet another unrefrigerated bottle. Only one member of staff doing tastings for 3 separate groups of people was a bit of a stretch and at the end of the quick 10 minute tasting we learnt nothing about the winery itself! Did we catch you on an off day, the reviews were so promising?

It is quiet, peaceful and incredibly picturesque. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and of course, once you have have a good walk round there is the cafe, with a series of delicious cakes all home baked by the lovely Eugenie.A really enjoyable way to spend the day.

Lovely place. Interesting range of species and history. Would improve if some of the specimens were labelled. Outstanding species should be identified on a map for a true arboretum experience. But still a lovely morning out and a great asset for Gisborne.

An awesome place to visit. I come here all the time as I'm local. Autumn is a spectacular time to visit when all the deciduous trees 🌳 leaves start changing colour as they start to loose them.It is quite a big park with good walking tracks. A must visit if you're a real nature buff & love learning about trees, or if you're into taking the family/children out for an awesome outdoor experience.
Iraia R — Google review
Stayed at the lodge. Comfortable room. Communal bathrooms, kitchen and sitting room/library were clean and well equipped. Gift shop and little cafe onsite. Many options of beautiful and we'll maintained walks throughout the arboretum with a unique playground for children.

A very pretty place to visit. There is a map that allows you to find the various walking trails around the arboretum, but it can be a little hard to follow. Keep an eye out for the coloured markers, as it can be easy to miss them and wander in the wrong direction. Still not to hard to get back on track. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy.

We enjoyed a lovely walk through the grounds enjoyed the stunning autumn colors. The area was very well kept a credit to the people who work there.

Must visit! Super underrated spot. 25kms worth of walking tracks, various levels and accessibility options. Cosy cafe with lovely baked treats. Great park area for the kids, and a wonderful discovery centre / library. Great history, very affordable and lovely staff. Cute shop too.

Nice walk, plenty to discover if you like to walk in the park between trees. Many places where some maintenance needs to happen.
Marlena S — Google review
Came here to walk around the arboretum and explore the nature. I really wanted to like this place; it had a lot of things I would enjoy. Plenty of trees, beautiful walking paths... But the routes and maps were utterly incomprehensible. Paths were not clearly marked and the map was no help. It looked like an artist's impression of what a map should be - no scale, no orientation points and no distinction between main or side paths. We got lost several times following the green route before giving up and just wandering around, but I feel like we missed out on a lot of stuff because we kept going in circles. Again, a shame because all the potential was there, but in the end we left only feeling frustrated.

Most beautiful place for plant and tree lovers. Gem of a place, nature at its best. Well marked walks, scenery, bird life spectacular. Hosts are amazing . Coffee shop excellent. Baked goodies are brilliant freshly baked daily. Facilities are well maintained clean, definitely a day outing for all , nice playground for kids. This beautiful place has alot of history behind it and over all 10/10. This place is awesome.

Great way to spend time with your family and get some fresh air. Cafe was a bonus. And it was fun looking for those Easter eggs.

If you visit the arboretum as two adults you will be charged MORE than if you visit as two adults with (up to) four kids!! Pure discrimination... McLaren Falls Park near Tauranga is much nicer and free of charge. We won't be coming back here.

Eastwood hill is stunning. If you’re looking for a place to slow down and connect with nature this is it. You could visit a number of times and still discover something new on their many tracks. You make it a day trip or stay overnight. We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed the cosy fireplace, comfy bunk rooms, and learning the history of the arboretum from the friendly staff. Highly recommend visiting in Autumn as the trees were all changing colour.

Rere Falls, located on the Wharekopae River, is a charming 5-meter high and 20-meter wide waterfall surrounded by picturesque farmland. Visitors can enjoy a large picnic spot and a beautiful swimming hole nearby. Recent rainfall has made the falls spectacular, creating great photo opportunities. However, caution is advised due to submerged tree branches in the water. The area features park benches for relaxation and picnics.
Great place to visit with family and friends. Two new picnic tables installed with uninterrupted views of the falls.
Lynne M — Google review
It was closed due to the bank side being damaged, so I parked at the entrance on the side of the road. Has a very big car park, toilets, rubbish bin, and table and seating.Waterfall is right at car park, so very little effort to see this spectacular waterfall
Leon K — Google review
As it has been raining a lot lately, the falls were spectacular and we got some great photos. The water was warm, though you need to watch for submerged tree branches when walking out in the water and swimming. At lot of tree debris have been washed down stream during the recent storm's and could do with clearing. There's park benches by the waterfall so a nice place to relax, have a picnic and watch the waterfall.

Beautiful waterfalls, very busy, not so deep which is good for kids and kids at heart. However, sign mention: waters not safe.Nice shaded area for parking.

Great scenery, secluded and quiet when we went. The road (about 30km towards Rere Falls) from Gisborne after the highway was a little challenging due to road construction and potholes, gotta drive with care.

Definitely the best stop when in Gisbourne! So much fun to be had. Make sure to bring a body board to slide down the natural slip n slide. Then spend some time at the waterfall, can even walk behind & slide or jump off. Amazing fun for all ages

Definitely a must see when in Gisborne. Beautiful spot to have a picnic, go boogie boarding down the natural water slide, or just chill and dip your toes in the refreshing water.

Always been an incredible place with some dark New Zealand history though, but a fun place to go to, just be aware it's a rock slide so be careful cause you can get hurt.

Soooo beautiful and healing!!!Tips: might not be friendly drive / trip if you have motion / car sickness 🚙 but if you can hang in there it's really worth it 😉Another tip: pick warm and sunny day ☀

Great fun! Take a hard body board or a lilo. It’s also a great spot for a picnic lunch.
James P — Google review
There are two car parks, one at top and one at the bottom where the toilet is. There are tables and seating next to the rock slide. It's such an awesome way to cool off on a hot day. I highly recommend doing.
Leon K — Google review
You HAVE to do this. BYO boogie board. saw people doing this on inflatable mattresses, but boogie boards work best. A reasonable drive there from Gisborne but well worth it. The rocks were smooth and it looked a bit freaky, but it was pretty safe, only drama was when some kids went down with people still exiting the water and nearly got taken out. Adults at the top soon sorted it out, but probably best to call people out doing that to keep it safe. Awesome fun though. Toilets you can get changed in are near the car park.
Mrshinnz — Google review
that's amazing nature you could have fun along
Beau 7 — Google review
The rock slide is a lovely natural wonder which looks like it would be fun on the right day.The reason for the low rating is re all the untidy Kiwis, there was rubbish all over the place, even in the water, blow up mattresses, tyres, bottles etc. The rubbish bins were overflowing with rubbish on the ground. If you have driven all this way with the food, drink, body boards, mattresses etc, take it all home with you. This was the worst I have ever come across in NZ. Not a good picture.
Darryl S — Google review
Looks like a great place to have fun sliding down the rock slides. There are warning signs up giving advice and injury is a possibility. We were on our own, so decided it wasn't safe to try, also no mobile phone connection available for emergency.I would definitely recommend a body board or mattress for sliding down. There's a fairly deep pool at the bottom, worth checking out for obstructions hidden under water before sliding (submerged free branches etc).
Chris B — Google review
It's okay, not great, but ok.There aren't enough trees to sit underneath, there are only two pinic tables down there, but they're so close together. You might as well take both. The water isn't clean, quite grotty, my daughter found a used sanitary pad in there. And the rubbish up top is quite off putting.
Shekinah H — Google review
Such a great day out for everyone. For the adventurous the rockslide is terrific endless fun. You can go again and again. Make sure you bring a body board but if you forget there are some broken ones in the skips. You can also bring smaller children as there is an area suitable for them to play.
Jamie C — Google review
It looks like it could be fun, however, this would be after some rain. When we visited it was low flow and even with a boogey board etc, I wouldn’t have gone for a slide. The nearby waterfall is a better picnic spot! Also, be careful, there is a a top carpark where camper vans should park because the bottom area does not have much space to park or turn.
Shaun D — Google review
SO MUCH FUN!! WENT ON AN AIR MATTRESS AND WAS AWESOMEWent in November 2024 and didn’t see many other people there!
Petra R — Google review
Absolutely awesome natural place. Bring your own boogie board, tire or a floating device have hours of fun. Even if you don't this is a natural formation unlike any other that is just worth coming and looking at for hours. Mind that the toilet is not serviced very often, maybe contact local authorities if that's the deal breaker. Here you can also find bunch of table for the picnic and couple of other cool places around to visit and walk around like rere falls
Edgar K — Google review
A great place for families, no shops so a good idea to take your own food and drinks, also boogie boards, blow up air mattress and blow plastic rings to slide down on, had an awesome time.
RJBS — Google review
A lot of fun if you are adventurous - imagine it would be even better if there had been a good rainfall before. A boogie board with handles would be better and safer than the assortment of yoga mats, etc that we saw
Alison T — Google review
Good fun, best to take an inflatable mattress/ air bed for best use. Body boards are ok. Generally safe, however you can expect a few bruises and bumps if you come off your equipment. Can get busy during peak periods, most people only stay for an hour or two. Toilets available to go to or to get changed in which was a bonus

Lake Waikaremoana, located in the remote wilderness of New Zealand's North Island, offers a backcountry experience amidst lush forests, waterfalls, and stunning lake views. This area is rich in Maori history and is home to a variety of walking tracks, including the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. The trek features some uphill sections but is generally manageable for most hikers. It's recommended to visit during summer when there are more people around and the weather is milder.
Beautiful, Spiritual , absolutely stunning place .Can't wait to come back

Lake Waikaremoana is a walk which is both beautiful and painful. The burning feeling in my legs every step up the 500meter incline is hard but the view at the top is rewarding. The toilets are clean and views are stunning. The wind is windy and brings you to a cold feeling. I would recommend finishing the hike I. Onepoto and starting on the other side. Make sure you are in a positive mindset before the walk. There is little service at the cliff edge otherwise there isn’t any.
Celine R — Google review
A hidden gem, beautiful Lake tucked deep into the back country. If you don't mind a few corners and dirt roads, check it out. Definitely off the beating track, but has that untouched feel to it.
Simi T — Google review
I'd recommend going during the summer because there will be more people around and because it gets quite cold up there on the winter. The trek is not that hard, it does have some uphill parts that will make you a little tired depending on how heavy your stuff is. Don't forget to bring enough food if you're doing the whole walk, make sure you bring fire sources and a good camping knife. Water and wood are provided at the huts. You'll have beautifull views of the lake, it is worth a visit.

Beautiful Lake and heaps to do in the region. If coming from north the gravel road is intense and takes a good car and experienced driver. Definatley worth it when you get there it is beautiful and serene, the forest and surrounding lakes are also mind blowing. Ultimate place to relaxation and exploring nature at its finest and untouched. The photos form the lake high up are from Loos lookout its a 30 min walk up, and 15 mins down
Sarah H — Google review
A favourite location, beautiful ancient forests, love the several hours worth of gravel roads to this remote haven. We've seen kiwi, and weka roadside, and wild pig, deer from the road whilst in transit.Crystal clear streams, and best during and after rain, with everything fresh and misty. The waterfalls are also beautiful to search out.Take care on the roads, look out for rockfalls, wild stock roaming, including cattle and horses.Always remember to take out what you take in, especially your rubbish.

Beautiful walk! If you are fit and don't stop all the time to take photos of the many point of view, you'll probably be much faster than what the sign are saying so take your time and enjoy!

Waikaremoana is a beautiful place with amazing views of the lake. Natural bush as far as the eyes can see. It has many walkways that are a mixture of easy and med hiking. I would recommend that you visit during summer time as winter can be challenging. With snow and road closures due to road/hill slips. Also if you visit please ensure to keep Te Urewera clean by taking all your rubbish with you when you leave. No electricity, No cell reception, No Gas and No Treated water. You can rent a beaken from the boat transportation service areas. We did trekking during winters and I will recommend you to try it out in Summers orelse trekking would be challenging. We were unable to use the tracks either.

One of New Zealand great walks. Amazing scenery and is a tramp showing untouched NZ. Road to the tramp is gravel and lots of pot holes. Huts are great.
Gareth L — Google review
First thing to know is you can complete the walk either way which means starting the walk from Onepoto Carl park or take the taxi to Whanganui hut and walk back to Onepoto car park.We started our walk from Onepoto car park. Stay led first night at Panekiri hut, beautiful place to stay first night it being the highest point of the whole tramp. Surrounded with beautiful views of the lake as the pictures might explain. We ended up booking a little late therefore had to camp out in Maranui hut which was not a bad place to be except for the sand flies that sting you places you never knew you could be bitten. We underestimated our walk for the third day as we left Korokoro waterfall and walk to Marauiti Hut not knowing it would take us 6-7hours to reach there. So if you are staying at the campsite on second night better complete waterfall same day.Last day walk was awesome mostly flat, few hill climbs here and there but nothing major. All in all I would recommend this walk to everyone. Such an amazing job done by Department of Conservation. Not to forget the boat ride back to the car park is the cherry on top of the great walk, pick pointing all the places you would have walked in those four days.

Nice little gem of a walk. Suitable for most fitness levels. Was just looking to do something a bit different while on holiday and had this suggested to us. It was well worth doing just for the Taketakerau (The Burial Tree) and the massive Puriri trees (never seen anything close to there size else where). While we did not see many birds or flowers on our visit I'm sure it was the time of year we went and the very dry weather. So would be worth a revisit at different times. Donations only and a picnic area so something to take the kids too.

A special place, where ancient trees are felt before seen. There is a real and palpable sense of presence, well, for those that have this kind of other sense.Time within this reserve, where the silence is natural, bird life becomes the symphony surrounding the olde woods. We've heard kiwi in the mornings, and Kereru and Tui frequent the mid layers.

In short: We tried to rent 2 mountainbikes to do the Pakihi Trail but it was not possible for the Motu Trails Team to assemble 2 mountainbikes that are safe to ride so they cancelled our trip without any excuse after 1h of fixing 4 bikes. Just don´t try to rent a bike there, they do not bother about maintenance at all, easy to tell. All the bikes had issues, like not working gear shifting, holes in the tires (and they charge you for using their tubes if you have a flat on the trail, haha), brakes not working, not even to mention the non functioning suspension fork. If we wouldn´t have asked for fixing the problems when we arrived they would have sent us with really unsafe equipment on the trail, unbelievable. They had plenty of time because we booked via phone days in advance. In the end they wheren´t even sorry about the day and the money we´ve lost due to their incompetence, the even blamed us for "loosing fate in their equipment", ridiculous.

What a little gem this was, wouldn't in all honesty have gone(museums aren't really my husband's thing) but for this lovely elderly local who recommended it. He was right, even my husband enjoyed it.
Anna H — Google review
What a credit to the volunteers that have created this interesting museum. Beautifully displayed, clean and informative. 3 stories to this facinating collection of history so I would recommend you allow an hour or more for your visit.
Jill J — Google review
My expectations weren't too high after looking at the downstairs (it was an eclectic mix of random looking items), but upstairs and the mezzanine were fascinating.Overall, the museum was clean and well organised.
Emily B — Google review
Never knew Opotiki had a museum or how good it was! First floor is all manner of everyday implements and stuff from the surrounding area collected and displayed in little groups e.g. Collection of stuff from the old Opotiki hospital, farming implements & stationary engines, etc. Second floor is less exciting with old photos from the past & geological stuff. The third floor is a real treasure with a big selection of Maori artifacts & mock-ups of various homes during Opotiki's history.

A must see!!!! If you’re in town, pop in and pay a visit to the wonderful Lady’s that put their whole heart into preserving the rich heritage of Ōpōtiki and continue to serve their community with out expecting anything in return. They love sweets, soo, if you are feeling generous, a little something would be greatly appreciated by the most wisest women I ever did meet. A little wit and humour is something they love, to brighten their day.

Unexpected treasure, superbly presented, best small town museum we've seen.

So much interesting stuff in this museum, both to do with the history of the area but also just in general. Came here looking for ancestry information and left with a few pictures of articles floating around the place. Lady that works at the counter is very helpful.

Waiotahe Beach offers a picturesque shoreline teeming with activities such as swimming, quad biking, fishing, and relaxation. While motor vehicles are not permitted on the beach, farm bikes can access it easily. Ample parking facilities are available nearby. This idyllic location allows visitors to catch glimpses of White Island and permits fires on its sandy shores. Although camping regulations remain uncertain, pets are welcome year-round.
Beautiful beach with plenty to do, swim, quad 4x4, fishing or just chilling. Not accessible to vehicles except farm bikes but plenty of parking near the beach. You can also see white island from the beach. You can also light fire on the beach. Not sure of camping is allowed on the beach or not. Yes pet / dog allowed all year round.

Really beautiful place, great for fish & chips on river bank. Picnic with family or friends, walkway is lovely along river bank. Love walking here watching sunsets so so pretty. Really special place to me.

This is one of my favorite places ever. Sort of grew up at its edges, and watched time pass from the bridge to the river mouth. If you do follow it to the sea, there is a jetty to fish from or launch a boat. A very cool kids playground. And a beautiful view at sunset to spend moments, maybe with some fish and chips.

Easy scenic stroll ,cycle, run along the river to the heads. The CBD and info centre is along the walk.Board walk to estuary and spot the bird life.Check out the mussel trawlers dropping off the daily catch.Search for the 10 bronze kiwi hidden along the walk.Reaching the reserve it is worth crossing over and viewing the replica of Mataataa Waka ,not more than 100 m away is Muriwais cave.Further on are clean public toilets and playground and near the heads is the bronze statue of lady in the rock.Hungry after your stroll?stop at Gibbos fish shop for fresh mussels and take in the sunset.

Bodies of Water
One of my favorite places around Whakatane, this place is a hidden gem. You can only get here by foot: either down the hill from Otarawairere road or around the first part of the Kohi point track. I think the latter is easier, especially for kids, and way more scenic. The bay itself has beaches made of fine pieces of shell rather than sand. The beach going into the water is a bit steep but you can swim here. There are rockpools at various places round the bay for fossicking through. No facilities so take only photos & leave only footprints.

Awesome beach and part of a longer walk. Steep walk down to the beach (worse coming up) but well worth it. Great spot for swimming and snorkeling. Views out to White Island from the walks at either end.

Mataatua: The House That Came Home is a cultural and historical landmark that holds the story of the brave daughter of Toroa, captain-navigator of the Mataatua waka. The must-visit Puketapu Lookout in Whakatane offers a brief yet rewarding activity, particularly for photography enthusiasts. This site has served as a lookout for the local Maori community, specifically the Ngati Awa iwi, for over six centuries. Formerly a Maori fortification known as a Pa site, it now stands as an organized viewpoint showcasing panoramic vistas of the town and rivermouth.
Nice, easy walk up from the main drag (The Strand). Lovely views over the waterfront and to the hills to the West.

Lilupa K — Google review
Walked up the steep path to the top to see the view
Kate R — Google review
Another historic site around Whakatane. This lookout was once a Pa site or Maori fortification but these days it's a curated lookout over the whole town and rivermouth. There is a small amount of parking at the bottom of the short track up the hill to the lookout and the large grassy area at the top has been fenced off. The views from the top are well worth the short uphill walk to get there. There's also a slightly longer walkway across the road to another old Pa site - the Papaka redoubt.
Benjamin M — Google review
Superb views of islands and plains from Whakatāne. It is however a short uphill climb so not ideal if you have issues climbing hills. Route can get mucky when raining but nice all the same!

Julians Berry Farm and Café is a great place to hang out with friends while enjoying some delicious ice cream, fresh berries, and some fun games. The staff are friendly and the food is okay - but what really makes this cafe stand out is the atmosphere! It's perfect for a family outing or birthday party.
Absolutely love coming here, the ice cream is delicious, mixed berries is yum! We also loved having a game of bball, playing in the outdoor area and picking strawberries in the field, best part is the strawberry picking and they taste absolutely YUMMY! Highly recommend this place for a whānau filled outting or take your kids out for there birthdays.Pics of me and my boys for my Iyruhs 12th Birthday.

Very nice place and worth a visit, for both kids and adults. They are located near Whakatane town and have got a fair dinkum strawberry farm. The desserts and ice creams available at the cafe are probably the best we had in any strawberry farm till date. There are so many options to choose from, and they are very affordable. A Mixed berry frozen yogurt, a strawberry sundae, Whittaker's, strawberry ice cream with waffle cone, and Greek yogurt with strawberries.....all these together cost us $50 only !!!We did order a few more protein smoothies and four different burgers as well. The pork and chicken pieces in the burger were very fresh and NOT just generic patties. Also to mention - there are multiple options for kids to play, and huge grounds. Basketball, baby golf, puzzles, slides, swings to keep them engaged

It was a fine day to pick berries. They've got strawberries, boysenberries and raspberries for picking. I would recommend wearing gumboots when picking strawberries as the path seems to be wet and muddy. Or you can just cover your feet/shoes with a plastic bag if you don't want to get them dirty. It was a good experience for my daughter. The strawberries were sweet. 🍓 🍓 🍓

It may not be the absolute best of the local Berry ice cream places, but it's close. It makes up for it with other things. There is a big play area. There is plenty of seating. Our whanau have been camping here for the last 10 years we have been through cyclone cookie some yet years and some very hot years. We keep coming back as it is a quiet peaceful camping ground, and get to meet a vast array of people from all walks of life and different countries. The staff are fantastic to deal with, and have never had any issues with where we were camping. We had used the cabins initially, but prefer to "rough it" with the rest of the family. Yes it is an older camping ground, but if you want 5 star accommodation go to a motel. We have already booked for Easter next year, and are looking forward to the peaceful relaxing time away from city life

I paid for 2 nights, but we left after the 1st. The rooms were cold, absolutely infested with mould and they were damp. The heater turned itself off in the middle of the night and we woke up freezing. Health and safety need to step in. The private spa smelt like urine and had weird globs floating around in the water. There was exposed wiring directly over the head of the main bed in our cabin. All in all unfit for use.

We stayed in our caravan for 1 week and the staff were very friendly and helpful I heard some scam bag abused one of the office staff first of all to you people who think you can go their and do as you please think again No dogs yet people still break the rules No bombing or running around the pool because if someone hits their head and injuries happen Don't think that Health and safety won't shut this place down because they will and can So Don't stuff it up for others who enjoy this beautiful place of nature and another thing to it says No Alcohol yet people still drink Alcohol and smoke drugs around the pool area I have seen it and smelt it Can't you read warning Police will come in and you will never be able to use the pools ever AGAIN.So have some respect for the staff and others around you. Don't stuff it up for others including staff and owners.

Rooms our motorhome!!Service when we checked in goodLocation awesome we've just travelled around the East Cape and are doing Awakeri railroad today. However, no toilet paper last night or first thing this morning. Cold shower in men's last night. Ladies toilets and showers looked as though they has been hosed out this morning but rubbish from floor, not removed. And while showering the lights go out. One electric jug in the kitchen is broken. The pools are awesome!! only spoilt by a vape smoking, music playing selfish male.I guess they are just awakening from a quiet winter period, but that's the time everything should be checked for the onslaught of happy campers.

Quiet. Potholes need attention. Some maintenance would go a long way on & in amenities. Better signage before turn into area.

A horrible disappointment. This place has such a lot of potential and was great just a year or two ago but it is now really run down. Stayed in a cabin that was not fit for purpose. Floors dirty, ceiling badly spotted with black cobwebs. Chairs had paint and animal hair on them and the light fittings looked really grimy and unsafe. Granted the fridge, microwave and crockery were clean but we were loathe to use the kitchen table. Whole place badly in need of maintenance. Even at budget prices it is not a nice place any more. I would never recommend the accommodation and we will definitely not be back.

So I arrived on a Sunday , must be cleaners day off . All amenity blocks in poor condition, rubbish bins full , crumbs on benches , dirty dishes etc , one block in particular looked like it had been abandoned for several weeks , leaves and toilet paper covered floors, one shower nozzle missing , one toilet systern gushing water; this was reported to the office but no action taken . The $18 single for a powered site is excellent value but I strongly advise to use your own facilities to cook and shower ( camp shower pressure is awful) the grounds are pretty well maintained , hot pools fine but overall the place needs a damn good shake up

Do not stay! Worst and mouldy accommodation. Stayed 2 nights in a mould infested cabin with my baby. Pillows had mould, bedroom walls and shower absolutely full of mould. Bed infested with ants so had to thoroughly clean the bed itself. Drove to whakatane Kmart to buy pillows blankets sheets and towels. Have spoken with staff in regards and response was not reassuring. Will be sending photos of mould through to health and safety. Really nice setting, and great to end the day with a soak in the hot pool.Toilet/shower block is in poor condition, but staff do their best to keep clean. Showers use geothermal water, so you come out smelling very sulphurous.

One night turned into three. Great staff. Fab hot pool. Quiet at the back, would be quite noisy near the road. Very reasonable price (Jan 2024) $38 for 2 people in a camper, including power and pool use. Pokéstop at the gate.

A wonderful place to soothe all our aching bodies. The water temperature was just right for all our Nanny's, mamas, and moko, including a 7 week old mokopuna who thought he was back in the womb.

The pools are nice, not as hot as they used to be, good for camping, rooms need to be updated and cleaned better, toilet blocks and changing rooms look like they get cleaned every fortnite or something cause they were filthy.

Our stay at Awakeri Hot Springs was nothing short of exceptional. The room we had was perfectly prepared for us Aucklanders, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our every need was met. The pools and spa were the pièce de résistance; floating on our backs while star gazing was an unforgettable experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Awakeri Hot Springs and would like to extend our gratitude to the staff for their exceptional service.

Lovely scenic spot, and even with the traffic whizzing past it's still quite peaceful.

Zephyr and Tommy are my favourite tracks in here. Great little mountain bike place. Please support Whakatane mountain bike club so they keep the tracks up to speck. Much appreciated 👍

Great place for a non strenuous walk through the wetlands and woodland. Plenty of wildlife to spot, and great information about the different trees in the arboretum area.

Pump track is a blast. Zephyr and Tommy are a must ride when visited. Note. Tommy has a drop at the end that is easy to crash on coz it has heaps of roots leading up to it

This is a small mountain bike park with clearly graded tracks and signage. Tracks in good condition and deserted mid week.

Real neat spot. Nice and shaded from the sun. Enjoy an hour walking through the trees and wetland. Disappointed I didn't bring my bike. Looks really neat!

Really impressed at the size of it and the quality of the trails. Whakatane mountain bike club have put an amazing amount of passion and effort in making it a very fast and flowy ride. Enjoyed their planned event with the kids. Will come back and ride again soon.Cheers
